GREGORY Family History
Recorded in over two hundred spelling forms and recorded in every European country is of Ancient Greek origins. Popular before the Christian era, it derives from "gregorien", a word meaning to be awake or watchful. The name was borne by two fathers of the Orthodox Church. The first being St. Gregory of Nazianzene (circa 325-390) and the second St. Gregory of Nyssa (circa 331-395). However its initial burst of popularity owed most to St. Gregory, The Great, the first Pope of all., 590 - 604 a.d. The famous Crusades of the 11th and 12th century gave it another boost. It was the fashion and practice, for returning warriors from the Holy Land to christen their children with biblical or saintly names, particularly those associated with the early church...Select Audience

Giles Gregory, I understand, served with Cromwell in Ireland and received an estate in Tipperary as compensation for his service.
On Giles death the estate passed to his cousin Thomas (1602-1666) who settled in Londonderry and there had two sons, George and Robert. During the siege Robert and George led the protestant forces in defense of the city. Robert was left bankrupt after the Crown refused to reimburse his expenses following the siege but George, and his many sons, fared better. One of his sons leased a farm in Limerick and, following a quarrel with his landlord, moved to Galway.
I'm aware of the Gregory family of Coole Park in Galway but my main quest is to find whether there really is a link with John Gregory (1179-1225) Lord of Fresely and Asfordby in Leicestershire, England who, apparently, was born in Ireland.
Any information around this topic would be appreciated.
